Samuel Burley, a world class track and field athlete who competes professionally in Europe and elsewhere around the globe, is running for the Independent Green party against Democratic Incumbent Mary Margaret Whipple. Burley and his supporters have stated that their goal is not to win, but rather, to increase awareness about third party candidates.

"No, I don’t think I can win. The odds are pretty small," the 26-year old said.

Carey Campbell, Chairman of the IGP, said that the second reason for having Burley run in the election was, "We’re providing an option where otherwise there would have been only one choice."

Burley has done virtually no campaigning, and has publicly stated that he agrees with most of Whipple’s views. However, Burley has expressed a need for change in the area of transportation.
