A large discrepancy was found tonight between election results posted on the State Board of Elections website and the Fairfax County website in the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors race in Springfield.
The State Board of Elections website has, as of 11:15 p.m., Democratic candidate Mike McClanahan with 9,356 votes, 99.80% of votes reported from 21 of 26 precincts in Fairfax County. They currently have Republican Candidate Pat Herrity with 0 votes. 18 write-in votes were noted.
“I’m pretty sure I got one vote,” Herrity said. “I’m about 90% sure I got another vote because my wife told me she voted for me.”
In contrast, the Fairfax County website has McClanahan at 9,303 votes and Herrity at 13,015 votes.
McClanahan, when reached for comment, stated “I would assume that the state board of elections website is incorrect and the county website is correct.”
“We’ve noticed that [discrepancy],” McClanahan said. “We assumed there was some sort of mistake.”
McClanahan went on to further state that he had already called Herrity and conceded the race.
“The one thing I wonder is with this new manual process is how many other mistakes are there in the county,” Herrity said. “It makes me wonder when something that’s far off.”
Neither McClanahan nor Herrity knew, when called, how the error occurred.
