Mark Herring
Incumbent Democrat
Print Managing Editor Jeremy Beales
Mark Herring is seeking to win his first full term representing his Fairfax and Loudoun-based district. He first became a state senator in a special election in early 2006, winning 62 percent of the vote against Loudoun county supervisor Mick Staton after his predecessor William Mims resigned. Herring’s top priorities are growth management, transportation and education. He is a strong believer in slower growth and better managed development.
During his time in the Senate he has sponsored legislation that would allow local governments more control overthe pace of growth. He supported last spring’s legislation compromise and supports more money being spent to improve transportation infrastructure. Prior to winning his seat in the Senate, Herring was an activist in Loudoun County, serving on the county board, chairing the county chapter of the United Way.
