FAQ
Q.
How do I use the search box?
A. Just type in a
few keywords related to the subject you are looking for and hit search.
A list of articles matching your keywords will be displayed. Click on the
title to view the article.
Q.
How do I use the sitemap?
A. We have a sitemap
that dynamically expands. Initially, all that is shown is the sections
(news, sports, opinion, style, etc.). Click on one of the arrows by the
sections to expand the list. Click on arrow next to stories to view the
stories listed in that section. The stories are then separated by academic
year and the issue date. When you find the article you are interested in,
click on the title to view the article.
Q.
How do I tell in which issue a story was published?
A: Simple, just look
at the URL. The issue date is the number right before the file name. The
date is in the MMDDYY format. Other useful information, such as the the
section the story was published and the academic year the story was published
in can be gleaned from the URL.

For example, the above
URL shows that the story was published in the news section of the April
30, 2001 issue.

Q.
OK, what are those dates in the top right hand corner of the website then?
A. The
dates in the top right corner of the website are, today's date, the latest
issue date and the last time the entire site was updated, respectively.
Q.
What does the date I see at the bottom of some pages mean?
A. On
the bottom of some pages, you might see something similar to this:
Page
Uploaded: Tuesday, 15-May-2001 10:44:40 CDT
This
refers to the time the page was uploaded to our servers. This date is generated
by the server. Since our server is located in Kansas City, the time listed
is in the Central Time Zone (CDT) instead of the Eastern Time Zone (EST).
The upload
date can be much newer than the issue date because we are constantly adding
past issues to our archives. In addition, we periodically add new features
to our website that require us to upload all the files on our website.
We include
the upload date because many professors want to know this date if the Broadside
is cited in an essay or paper.
Q.
Do you have any stories from 1982 in your archive?
A: Sorry.
While it would be nice to have all the stories Broadside every published
in our archives, our archives currently start from Fall 1999. In addition,
no electronic copies of issues older than 1997 exist, which makes it difficult
to put those stories up on the web (someone would have to manually type
in old stories or we could scan in older issues - either way a slow and
tedious process). Nevertheless, we will slowly expand our archive backwards,
just don't expect to see stories from the '80s anytime soon.
